  • Density is defined as the number of organisms living in a specific area at a certain time.
  • Density-independent factors affect a population no matter the density.  EX. natural disasters, temperature, sunlight
  • Density-dependent factors can only affect a population when it reaches a certain density.        EX. competition, predation, disease, parasitism.
                                                                                                             Low Density ------------------> High Density
  1. Decide whether the following scenarios are density dependent or independent.
             a.  Mosquitoes can only live in warm weather.  A cold front comes through, the temperature drops                                and kills all the mosquitoes.
             b.  Tommy has the flu and begins to sneeze uncontrollably while crammed into an elevator with ten                            other people.  They all get sick.
             c.   You are at a party with 30 other people, two pizzas are ordered to feed all of you. You all race to grab
                    a slice.
             d.  Most plants cannot grow if they are at the bottom of a deep lake because light only penetrates to a                        depth of 30m.
