This class is part of the Biotechnology Pathway. The course is divided into two year long classes. In order to receive Merced College credit you must complete both semesters and maintain an average grade of a B (80% and above).

Course Outline:
Introduction to Biotechnology: General introduction to biotechnology, how it is used, regulated, and the types of careers available. Laboratory Skills: Focuses on basic skills that are essential to conducting biotechnology research, such as safety, maintaining a laboratory notebook, measuring volumes and mass, and making solutions. Microbiology and Cell Culture: Introduction to bacteria morphology and reproduction. Learn microbiological and cell culturing techniques and how to perform a gram stain. DNA Structure and Analysis: Introduces techniques for DNA manipulation, isolation of DNA, DNA fingerprinting through restriction digestion and gel electrophoresis. |
